Ramana Maharshi was not an avatara,he dismissed this question on many occasions. When Yogananda visited Ramana in 1935,Yogananda asked about disseminating spiritual advice to the masses,Ramana said that this could not be done,he was speaking authoritatively as an 'elder' to Yogananda. An Avatara would not ask for this kind of advice.I am the last person to undermine Yogananda's spiritual attainment,I have been praying to him since boyhood. There is a strange tendency among devotees to elevate their guru to Avatara status.Ramakrishna,Shirdi Sai,Shivananda
Meher Baba,to name but a few, have all undergone this elevation.
Yogananda was NOT above Lahiri Baba in spiritual attainment,ALL kriyabans recognise Lahiri Mahasaya as The Father of all Kriya Yogis, after Babaji.Lahiri himself was NOT an Avatara. It does seem ridiculous,I know, to even think about debating such matters, but it is also rather silly to use such titles as Avatara, because to do so implies a hierarchy.By saying that Yogananda was an Avatara you are saying that he was above Lahiri,on equal footing with Babaji.I really dont think that Yogananda would have felt very comfortable withsuch a claim
