Subject: Yogananda - Rama Tirtha

Satyeswarananda mentions that Yogananda's devotional attitude got propelled by reading works of the then famous Swami Rama Tirtha early in his life.

And here is an excerpt from Satyananda's biography on Yogananda:

"After some days, by reading the books of an eminent Swami Ramatirtha, he felt himself benefited and a clear idea of Ekeswarabada, Adwaitabada and had the experience of Tejaswita(Splendour). During that time, he had always in his hands an English translated short biography of Swami Ramatirtha and his speeches. He had strong impact in him during his tour to America. He used to sing in common popular bengali sur(Rhythm) the short translated poems of Swami Ramatirtha, which were sprinkled with devotional feelings. Sometimes he himself translated those poems in his own words and sang them with full emotion. He was very much inspired and propelled by the patriotic and devotional songs of Swami Ramatirtha in a single reading. His face illuminated with joy, and drove away the darkness of our hearts. Our minds were overpowered with naba ullash (new delight). Whenever he encountered any of his friends he enjoyed very much describing to them a story of Swami Ramatirtha with a very emotional touch. Swami Yogananda's "Songs of the soul" and many other poems were very much influenced by the writings of Swami Ramatirtha."

This is highly fascinating. I have located a complete edition of Swami Rama Tirtha's works at the website of the Blue Dove Foundation. It can be ordered online, but as it has seven volumes it is priced at juicy $74.95. It's title is "In Woods of God-Realization".
