" The reason I bring this up is because I recall a person on this board sometime ago claiming that Yoganandaji changed the breathing from nose to mouth."

On the other hand, I have also read posts claiming that this style breathing is followed in some "traditional" kriya lines in India. Actually, though, one doesn't expressly take the breath in through the mouth or expell it though the nose, these are the results of correctly making the sounds accompanying the kriya pranayam. The sounds facilitate the movement of the ida and pingala currents, and when you connect up the cool and warm nature of the currents with the way the breath is taken in and expelled when the sounds are performed correctly, it all makes sense.

"Who knows? There is a lot of confusion. What source can be trusted?"

One of the unfortunate aspects of the "authenticity" claims is that they easily sow seeds of doubt and confusion. Many folks chase the claims of these purveyors of authenticity, and mimic the techniques, believing thereby that they will be enlightened. But the only knowledge we can trust is self-knowledge. The practice has to resonate with us. Thus it is helpful to have or develop an understanding of yoga science and apply this to our practice.

I agree in part with the other Anon reply that Kriya is a collection of techniques. I distinguish, however, that Kriya is a collection of yoga methods with a theme and purpose that integrate with each other, in conformity with Patanjali's sutras. The mainstay of Kriya is Prana and the theory of sushumna, ida and pingala. From this everything else can be derived or discovered.
