Well, it's been a long time since anyone's posted here - but having just started watching the series (and knowing that I'm unlikely to find out who Book really is from the few episodes that were made) I thought I'd cheat a little and see what other people thought. Obviously, as many have said, Book's someone of some standing. Despite some of the earlier suggestions I can't see any reason to assume that Book's murky past is actually his past. There's nothing to say that whatever he was doing he isn't still doing. He's either a genuinely religious man or he's very good at playing the part - but my thoughts tend to go towards the fact that he arrived on Serenity just at the same time as the renegade doctor and the girl who'd just been busted from an Alliance experimental programme. Coincidence?

Much as I like the good shepherd, and would like to think he WAS the 'good' shepherd, I can't help but wonder if he isn't simply monitoring the progress of the experiment.
