I saw a link to the interview on the TWoP boards. Nathan Fillion comes across as such a considerate and intelligent fellow. The women of Firefly are definitely a beautiful and curvy bunch. Can't quite see the appeal of the waif type. (Though I think Fred from Angel is beautiful too. Guess I'm just easily impressed.) I can see how Kaylee's appearance is important to her character. A cerain bouncing roundness visually underlines her youth, innocence, and enthusiasm.

Thanks for posting about this on this board. Oh, also think, for anyone else who gets a chance to read the article, that NF does a great job identifying the salient traits of each character and how they affect the captain. Loved how he explained Kaylee's importance to Mal and the reasons. Think he would get really, really scary if she were ever threatened.
