I think that's a great point, about Zoe wanting Wash to keep his innocence and not be as battle-hardened as she is. She probably does need, as you say, "something that allows her to keep on believing life is worth living even after all she's seen." If we just look at the clothes they wear, we can see that Wash, with his almost Hawaiian-style short sleeve shirts, is ready to enjoy life because he knows how wonderful and fulfilling it can be. But Zoe, in her rough battle gear, has seen the violent side of life and is prepared to face it whenever it rears its head. In the relationship, she can help him to be realistic about the dangers around them, and he can help her to be optimistic about the good times to be had. Great stuff.

Of course, more of Zoe's caution about the dangers of life can be seen in the way she cuts open the apples, wary of grenades. Wash just chomps right in, thinking only of how good the fruit is going to taste. What a prefect scene. And they're putting this on hiatus? Please.
