I think what I like is that the show makes it clear that Zoe doesn't want Wash to display her style heroism. It's one of the continuing romantic tensions with Buffy's relationships (one I think they deal with well) that neither she nor her partners are sure if she can be satisfied with someone who isn't as strong/damaged as she. Zoe knows what it took to become who she is now, horrifying war experiences and semi-fond memories that end in truncated rib-cages. No way she would want Wash toughened up by something like that. Not very likely either that she would want to spend her private time with some one like that either. Wash is her anchor in normalcy, just like Serenity is for Mal, something that allows her to keep on believing life is worth living even after all she's seen.

Don't think Wash is ever going to doubt the love part of their relationship again. "Him. Sorry, you were going to ask to me to choose right?" She didn't seem to have Xander's difficulty choosing between a best friend and a lover.
