Subject: What a brilliant episode this was. Easily the best so far... (spoilers)
In reply to: Cactus Watcher 's message, "CW's Writer's Journal for "Objects in Space" (Spoilers for the ep)" on 11:02:28 12/14/02 Sat

The sad thing is that you could say that about the last bunch of episodes. Each was more brilliant than the one before. The show has finally truly begun clicking in all of the areas. I so hope that the show is picked up. I have become so attached to the show that the thought of never finding out about things like the full implications of what was done to River at the Academy; whether the comment that Early made about Book not being a Shepherd and the reason why the Alliance was so swift in tending to his wounds a few episodes ago are tied (Book is obviously hiding a great deal); whether Simon and Kaylee will ever get to kiss already, is killing me!

Either way, "Objects in Space" ranks up there with Joss' best episodes on any of his series. Up to this point, I don't think he ever truly matched the level of directorial brilliance on his other shows that he did in his "Buffy" episodes. Not to say that his "Angel" eps and his previous "Firefly" eps weren't enjoyable or very good, but nothing matched the level of this episode. While I don't know if you could quite rank it as high as OMWF, Hush, or The Body, it was definitely up there. Dark, disturbing, at times funny...and also incredibly tense. A perfect episode, with also a nice dollop of philosophy, regarding the "objects in space"/"what is a room when no one is in it?" metaphor.

And how wonderful was the moment where it looks like Jayne is going to come to the rescue with his arsenal o' weapons, but it turns out he was only pulling the blanket closer to him in his sleep?

Or when Kaylee lightly touched her foot to Simon's cheek, and the almost kiss in the corridor later?

Or the first moment where it seems that River has become incorporeal?

What a show!

Rob
