I get the feeling that Mal regards it as one step up from slavery. There's also the fact that there's a certain amount of manipulation inherent in Inara's job. Mal's a fairly straight forward guy and I'm betting that bugs him.

What I find interesting is that the *only* insult that Mal uses much against Inara is "whore". It's rude, but true. He belittles her job time and again, but never goes much beyond that. He doesn't call her a slut or offer to buy her services. He doesn't patronize her by hiding his feelings about what she does.

I agree that part of it is the way others view Inara. He's throwing what he sees as the truth into their faces. You can dress a horse up in a dress and teach it to waltz, but it's still a horse. A whore, no matter what fancy lanuage you hide behind, is still a whore.
