Mal's character is reminiscent of other flawed "heros"--Mulder, Jack Bauer--in TV land. Their conflicted internal struggles give us a look into a darker path we would never choose. Having an actor who nailed this so early on was a delight to watch: A glimpse in "Serenity", the torture scene in "War Stories."
Joss seems preoccupied with these characters and luckily finds actors like Jas. Marsters and Nathan who possess the chops to repel and draw us in simultaneously. Yeah, to a network exec this multidimensional unheroic type is extremely hard to take and sell. I doubt if Spike would have lived beyond the first season if he had been portrayed as he is now. Joss probably assumed FOX execs were already familiar with his current characters on Buffy and Angel so he may have indulging in a little hubris by introducing a complicated, ambiguous lead to them.
