After a minor stutter-step last week, I feel like Firefly is unquestionably back on track. I agree with whoever wrote below that seeing the episodes in order might have helped, because the chemistry between the crew members has been on the erratic side.

It was nice to finally see some of the backstory behind Simon and River. I think Greenburg did a pretty good job making Simon into a sympathetic character. I like that he is a man torn between two worlds--the high society life he left behind and the rough frontier life he's chosen for his sister's sake. I think we are destined to have a future episode where he has the opportunity to return to a lifestyle like his old one and realizes he can't do it anymore. I see Joss has also added another entry to his ever-growing "Bad Dad" list. Finally, is it just me or is there a kind of vaguely incestuous subtext at work here in the relationship between Simon and River?

I love the chemistry between Kaylee and Inara. Not much to add here, just how much I really loved their scene together in the shop.

The people in the village are kind of a cool idea. The nineteenth century years in the US gave rise to plenty of cult communes and millenarian groups that went off to live in rural wilderness settlements. Despite some of the superficial brotherly love rhetoric, there was always this really sinister undercurrent to it (Koresh and the Branch Davidians were a later manifestation of this same phenomenon; there are bunches of these communes in Latin America today).

The scene with River dancing intercut with the gunfight going on, with the Celtic reel playing on top of it the whole time was beautifully concieved and directed. It reminds me a bit of Sam Peckinpah, though I don't ever recall him using this exact technique. Nonetheless, it was a great juxtaposition of images.

I agree with Darby, though, that the Chinese is getting to be a bit of a distraction. Since this episode was supposed to air earlier, I wonder if the writers thought the same thing and toned it down as the series went on. It was worse this week than it's been in any previous week.

The scenes in the "Previously on . . ." teaser seem to include stuff from episodes we haven't seen yet. Those must have been edited together before Fox rearranged the episodes.

Just my $.02 on this week's episode,

'trap
