Subject: Oh My God! It's the Rob Effect! Spoilers for "Safe."

I had a feeling that if this was the week that Rob wasn't that crazy about Buffy, I'd be really pleased with Firefly - y'know, yin yang, balance of nature, yada yada. And so it did come to pass...

This is good - focus on a couple of characters at a time, and now with a few such eps in the past, the little vignettes with the unfeatured characters still have some resonance. River and Simon both grew some personality this week, and I found myself liking both and getting pulled into their story. It's a fine line of coherence to deal with in River, and they seem to be finding the balance, although to seque directly into next week's "she's getting worse" from here seems a little odd - hope they make it work.

The Good Stuff - River and Simon's rapport, Kaylee and Inara, the bits of actual business, the logic of the dealings with the Law, some background, those doppleganger kids, the Mystery of the Shepherd, most of the dialogue, no new science faux pas (that I noticed, at least), a hint of costuming that didn't raid the archive of Bonanza paraphenalia, Jayne's raid (with dialogue) and rushed unraid, the hint that even if your captain isn't infallible he's still the boss.

The Less Good Stuff - a town where kidnappers (from a village within walking distance) can wander up to a social event and snatch people with impugnity. Still a bit too much Bonanza paraphenalia. Wow, not much!

Other Stuff - the Chinese is going from flavor to a bit of a distraction, and still seems to have very little influence otherwise (usually there would be a strong cultural injection with the language, ahem - but the Chinese newspaper [Business, perhaps? That would be ironic!] and a wider variety of faces were nice touches). Makes one wonder what may be slipping past Standards and Practices - are bilingual viwers banning their kids from the room and writing angry letters? Who was the guy shooting from the hill? At first he seemed with the Law, and then with the bad guys. I think it was time to make Wash or maybe Zoe the Voice of Reason rather than Inara again. What was the post holer about?

And I'm pretty sure that the "Patron" showed up as some kind of enforcer in the last scene of John Doe tonight, which is just bizarre.
