I agree. In parts of the states and territories you mentioned, it scarcely mattered what side you were on. You were going to suffer from the war because everyone was suffering. In many areas there was no concensus among the locals. Southern sympathizers lived next to union sympathizers. Often you couldn't trust your neighbors enough to let them know what you thought. When the troops came through, regulars or irregulars, they were usually more interested in the reputation of the region rather than which farms belonged to enemies and which didn't.

Poverty, distrust and violent irregulars-turned-outlaw make a bad combination. If anything the greater isolation of the fringe planets on Firefly adds another dimension to this mix.
