I had not previously considered the question, but maybe in a way I do. Which is worse;

- telling someone that they are your target, or

- making someone your target, while telling them that you will watch their back?

I submit that if you intend to do violence upon another person, then telling them so ahead of time at least demonstrates a certain honesty.

In my previous post, I did not mean to imply that Mal was wrong to kill Crow. Crow was a person who desparately needed executing. Rather, my point was that I don't see Crow's actions as any more harmful to the crew of Serenity than Jayne's. Thus, from the view of consistency, we shouldn't be shocked if Mal had chosen to execute Jayne.

Farthermore, I believe that Jayne's betrayal of Simon is continuing. Mal knows about Jayne's treachery, but Simon does not. If Jayne is really contrite, he will inform Simon of his perfidy.

We all know that Jayne did not have any love for Simon and River. Nobody forced Jayne to remain with the crew. If he didn't like it, he could resign the ship at any port of call. He doesn't, because he is in it for the money. Mal, on the other hand, does what he does as passive (and sometimes more than passive) opposition of the Alliance, and because he retains a core of decency.
