I think Mal had some big suspicions about Jayne stemming simply from the fact that the feds knew exactly where to find Simon and River. Jayne was pretty jumpy when he got back on board, too--I thought his cheer felt pretty forced. Mal didn't have anything concrete, but he had his instincts, which he's learned to trust. Forcing the truth out of Jayne was the logical thing to do.

Agree with you totally, totally on Simon/River. There's nothing erotic about their relationship. They're very close and loving, but clearly as a brother and sister. I'm not surprised people are trying to eroticize it, though--there's a whole list for Buffy/Dawn slash. Ew.
