I think just about everything is covered in the course of the season. A few things might not be explained, but they aren't of real importance. One major character didn't return for the series. Another didn't return for another year and a half. By the time she came back they had to remind us who she was anyway. Two major characters are much different and you are as just as well off not knowing about their first incarnations. One thing that happens during the year is that a huge plot hole in the pilot is fixed. That part is shown in a flash back so it should not be a big problem.

If you want to see the pilot, I'd suggest renting it first.
