I'm perfectly okay with sticking through first seasons that aren't as great as later ones (or at least don't get great until late in the first season). I lived through it with "Buffy" and "Farscape," to name two.

Actually, luckilly, it now seems, the pilot is not included in the set. The pilot was already released in a separate DVD. I had never bought it, because I didn't want to just get into one episode and then not have any more to watch. I was planning on buying the pilot DVD when the first season came out and watching them both together. But now maybe I shouldn't!

Here's a question that would really help in my decision if you could answer it:

The fact that it's bad aside, is the pilot necessary to understand later episodes, just from a plot standpoint? If I start from the first episode in the boxed set, will I be horribly confused? In other words, should I suffer through the first ep to become acquainted with the characters, plot, etc. Or can I get by without it?
