I was wondering about the people watching Firefly and thought a survey might be in order.

1. Are you watching Firefly primarily because of
a. Joss' track record.
b. I like sci-fi.
c. I like westerns.
d. other (explain).

A. Without Joss at the helm, the advertising made it look a lot like 'Space Rangers' a pathetic attempt at science fiction that was inflicted on the masses ten or fifteen years ago and lasted maybe 3 episodes. I remember it, because it was so terrible it was actually kinda fun to watch.

2. Are you a fan of Star Trek? If so, what do you like and dislike about the franchise? Feel free to talk about individual series, and the movies separately or to lump them together.

Sort of. I like TOS and TNG, but the franchise has gotten progressively worse with each 'new' series. TOS and TNG were about the characters, and attempted to keep the technobabble to a minimum. DS9 could have been good war story in it's final seasons, but lacked the courage of it's convictions. Voyager was fanboy pablum, with technobabble solutions to technobabble problems, wooden characters and reclycled scripts from TNG. I watched the first two seasons of Voyager, but lost interest, and didn't pick it up again until the last season...and it was worse. I had hopes for Enterprise...but it's the same bunch of writers, and they're doing the same things again.

3. Are you a fan of Star Wars? What do you like and dislike about it.

I saw the original star wars in the movie theatre when i was seven, which problably caused my liking for science fiction in the first place. From an adult perspective though...George Lucas is a great idea man, and great behind the camera, but don't let him near a typewriter. He can't write dialogue.

4. Are you a fan of Babylon 5? Are all 'deep' sci-fi TV shows doomed to both low ratings, and to being pushed to the margins of broadcasting?

Yes. :)

5. If you like sci-fi, what are some of your other favorites, TV, books or movies?

Movies:

Forbidden Planet and 2001.

TV:

The recently aired Dune miniseries on Scifi was good. Farscape, recently canceled by the same channel, was excellent. Space: Above and Beyond was an excellant war story told as science fiction; too bad it only lasted one season.

Books:

Hoo boy.

Anything written by Herbert, Asimov, Haldeman, Heinlein, Greg Bear or Gregory Benford. :) Toss in Dan Simmons I guess. I like either space opera or hard science fiction.

6. Westerns have mostly faded from the tv screen. Do you have any old favorites? Do you have any favorite Western movies? Do you think the genre is worn out?

I've enjoyed westerns, but never really had much interest in them. Seen most of John Wayne's and Clint Eastwoods.

7. I would say that Buffy and Angel are about complex relationships and tearing down fixed ideas about good and evil. Assuming Firefly gets the chance to develop do you think it will follow the same pattern?

It seems to be doing that already.

8. Play Joss for a moment. Where do you think the meatiest potential parts of Firfly lie?

The dark recesses of the human soul. :)
