I'm going to answer this without reading anyone else's answers first.

1. Are you watching Firefly primarily because of
a. Joss' track record.
b. I like sci-fi.
c. I like westerns.
d. other (explain).

a and b

2. Are you a fan of Star Trek? If so, what do you like and dislike about the franchise? Feel free to talk about individual series, and the movies separately or to lump them together.

Not a big fan, though I do watch it occasionally. I like ST:TNG the best, never watched DS9, and didn't like Voyager.

3. Are you a fan of Star Wars? What do you like and dislike about it.

I resented it when the first one came out, because I read a lot of science fiction, and people who knew nothing about SF assumed that it was all fairly mindless fun like Star Wars. I've gotten over that, and enjoy them for what they are now.

4. Are you a fan of Babylon 5? Are all 'deep' sci-fi TV shows doomed to both low ratings, and to being pushed to the margins of broadcasting?

I'm a recent fan of B5. I'd heard it was good, but had never watched it until the last run on the SciFi channel. I thought it was terrific. And yes, I suspect that 'deep' sci-fi shows are doomed to low ratings, because they require the audience to pay attention to what's going on, and to see most episodes.

5. If you like sci-fi, what are some of your other favorites, TV, books or movies?

Books: Connie Willis, Lois McMaster Bujold, Theodore Sturgeon, Heinlein, Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun series, LeGuin, Anne Bishop - I could go on, but won't. TV: B5, Farscape. Movies: The Abyss, Contact, Minority Report, Men in Black :)

6. Westerns have mostly faded from the tv screen. Do you have any old favorites? Do you have any favorite Western movies? Do you think the genre is worn out?

The only Western series I've seen more than a couple episodes of is The Big Sky with Barbara Stanwyck. The mini-series of Lonesome Dove was great. Movies I like are Silverado, Unforgiven, The Shootist, The Searchers, and True Grit. I guess I'm more of a John Wayne/western fan than I thought.

7. I would say that Buffy and Angel are about complex relationships and tearing down fixed ideas about good and evil. Assuming Firefly gets the chance to develop do you think it will follow the same pattern?

I think so. We've already got a start on the relationships, with only three episodes. From what I've seen so far and read in interviews, I think we're going to see a lot of ideas about right and wrong coming up, and how you may need to do wrong to survive.

8. Play Joss for a moment. Where do you think the meatiest potential parts of Firefly lie?

It seems obvious that River is being set up as a target, and that's probably going to be the focus of the main plot arc for the season. Personally, I find the idea of the Mal/Zoe/Wash triangle interesting. I don't think Mal and Zoe have or will have any romantic interest in each other, but there's going to be some divided loyalties there, since Zoe has been with Mal longer than she's known Wash.
