Subject: Some quick thoughts on "Out of Gas" (spoilers)

It's really late, I should be asleep. But I just had to type up some quick thoughts about tonight's episode. First off, it was hands-down the best one so far. The main plot was strong and suspenseful, and the flashbacks were cleverly intercut. They added a great deal more to all of the characters, but at the same time, didn't detract too much from the ship-in-trouble story. In fact, I love how the whole episode was set up, because in a way we were seeing flashbacks within flashbacks. Sometimes, we saw flashbacks that Mal was having as he made his slow way across the ship, bleeding and dying all the way, of how he bought Serenity, assembled the crew, etc. Other times, the flashbacks sprang from the crew members, facing their possible deaths. Of course, the crew members themselves were part of Mal's larger flashback. I loved when parts of Mal's memories infringed on his present reality, like at the beginning, when he saw the light shine over him, and he looked up. Of course the light was from the door of Serenity opening, the day that he was showing it to Zoe for the first time.

So, now we know how a lot of the crew assembled. We already knew that Zoe and Mal fought together in the war. Now we know how they brought Wash on board, although we still don't know how he and Zoe fell in love (and did anyone else wanna whack Mal when he dragged Wash away from her in the infirmary?). And we know how Jayne joined the team (one of my personal favorite "origin" stories). And we know how Kaylee joined, and can I just say woo hoo Kaylee! I never would have pegged her as the type to have hot sex up against a wall like that, but that's what's great about how new these characters are to us. We learn new things about them each week! The meeting between Innara and Mal was great, too, though I'm still itching to know what she wouldn't tell him...why she turned her back on the Alliance.

What else did I love? The Simon birthday party at the beginning. I can't tell why, but he's my favorite character. Oooh, oooh, and I loved the continued River/Shepherd interactions and her reassuring him that they would not die of suffocation but would freeze to death first. I loved the surprise ambush...As a well-told story, not that I wanted Mal to get shot in the chest. And I wish my thoughts could be more organized and deeper at the moment, but I'm just trying to jot down as much as I can about the episode.

The only thing I didn't love so much was the Zoe-deficiency we've been experiencing lately. For the past two episodes, we haven't seen too much of her. In "Jaynestown," she stayed on the ship. This episode...unconscious. Of course, we've only seen 5 episodes so far, and she had a lot to do in the first three...not to mention that we're viewing these out of order, so her screentime may have felt a little more balanced if we saw it occur the way it was intended. And, again, this isn't so much a criticism of this episode, but more the airing schedule. Pre-empted one week. Baseball game the next. Then ep with not much Zoe, and then another. And I know that on a show with such a large cast, not everyone can get a lot of screentime each week. Hope she has more next week, which looks, from the promos, like it's gonna be another kickass ep. Me like swordfights!

Anyone want to go a little more in depth, please be my guest! ;o)

Rob
