Interesting notes, as always, CW. Thanks for sharing these ideas with us every week. I have a few thoughts of my own in response:

"The explosion - The original Enterprise on Star Trek broke down so often that my brother and I used to refer to it as the starship Booby Prize . A ship in a well-funded government force like Star Fleet ought to be more reliable."

That would make sense, yes; but, in my experience, government fleet stuff tends to be far less well-maintained than private stuff. Parts=tax dollars or something, I guess :-)

"I don’t really like the “do it because I’m stronger than you” fight between Mal and Wash either. The verbal fight where Mal impresses an idea on Wash was better, but…"

I assume you are referring to the fight in the medical room here. On some level I agree with you. What strikes me about the med room fight, however, is that Mal had already attempted to use verbal reasoning with Wash and it failed. He says something about getting out of the doctor's way and working on getting the ship moving so that everyone has a chance to survive. Both are entirely reasonable statements (especially the former), but not ones likely to impress someone watching his wife suffer. I'm not necessarily defending the _way_ Mal handles this situation, but it is worth noting that he doesn't start a physical confrontation as a first resort.

"Make the signal go farther - Anybody who’s ever had an unreasonable request from their boss is sure to cringe at the sound of this."

I interpreted this less as an unreasonable request and more as a captain with limited verbal skills trying to get his crew to think 'outside the box' in an emergency. The same goes for his conversation with Kaylee.

Anyway, just my $.02 for this week.
Keep the notes coming,

'trap

P. S.: QotW Answer, Favorite characters:

Wash -- good at his job, and pleasantly cocky about it; loves his wife; good sense of humor; what's not to like?

Kaylee -- incredibly real, reminds me so much of some of the girls I grew up around that it's almost scary
