I guess I'm confessing to having troubles with the character Mal. I'm mostly responding here to point out my own prejudices.

Any-old-ship can have 'a Mal' as the owner and do OK, but I'm having trouble seeing him as someone special, as any kind of a hero. I don't think calling Mal either an everyman or an antihero would be a particularly strong argument here. So far, he's not the kind of guy I'd want to depend on to get me out of danger. It's not that I can't conceive of Mal as a leader. I just haven't seen that quality in him yet. As implied, I think some of the things we were shown in "Out of Gas" were steps in the wrong direction. Kirk of Star Trek may have spent a good bit of time posturing for the ladies, but he seemed like a real leader. Pickard of ST:NG may have spent a lot of time fussing over what was politically correct, but when the chips were down, he seemed like he knew a good idea, when he heard one. I think each of the characters on Firefly needs to be more sharply defined, but especially Mal.

O/T On knowing folks like ME characters. I have a cousin who is so much like Fred from Angel that whenever someone says anything bad about Fred, I don't want to reply, but cringe and hide.
