a movie of the late 60's starring Jon Voight and Dustin Hoffman was about male prostitution. It was fairly popular at the time. But, there wasn't any big clamour from anyone to see more.

As for me, I'm not sure there is anything stereotypical about Inara as a prostitute, at least from the point of view of our current society. I think of a typical prostitute these days more as being bleached-blonde or bleached/dyed-redhead, even those from racial minorities who normally have black hair. On the other hand I do think a dark-haired woman was chosen specifically for her 'exotic' looks, which you described. And Inara certainly contrasts with Kaylee. Being exotic-looking and even being sensual looking are both different than being like a prostitute, which to me is more a matter of demeanor and attitude rather than looks.
