I beg to quibble a little. Zoe, imho, cannot represent girl power. It's one thing to let the practically doll-sized SMG portray girl power in a character of sixteen. Even Buffy has been moving from the "girl" identification to "woman." But Zoe is clearly a "woman growed" and a fully mature person. No doubt she has her warts and failures, and niggling little immaturities--and I for one cannot wait to see them revealed.

Something I very much like is how each of the women in Firefly is complex and appears 3-dimensional. Yes, Kaylee is sweet. She's also very bright, can fix an engine as soon as look at it, and has a little of Cordy's inability to be tactful (just on occasion--look at how she got her job). And she appears to have a healthy take on love and sex. Should be fun to watch her grow Simon up a little.

Inara is also a lot more than the "whore with a heart of gold." She's more than Miss Kitty (warning, Gunsmoke reference!) too. She's a small business woman, who protects her clients and has high professional standards. Her ban on "servicing" captain or crew is likely to conflict directly with her feelings--another fun story coming.

River is still 2D for me, but that's more an artifact of her mystery woman role and the little screen time she has had. At some point, I'm sure she will reveal herself and we'll either love or hate it. I'm still chuckling over the whole hair terror scene.

Finally, you don't list Mal. What principle or concept does our captain represent? Surely he must contribute something, given his large proportion of air time?
