I just realized that the crews in Firefly each represents the elements of BtVS.

Joe - girl power
Jayne - violence
Kaylee - sweetness
Josh - humor (he reminds me Joss)
Book - moral
Simon - intelligence
River - mystery
Inara - sex

None of them are described as entirely good or bad (even Jayne) but as vital members of the ship Serenity.
