Quite true (in modern armies anyway). That's why I'm not saying it's impossible that a general could still make himself useful in a close-quarters firefight. But consider that it generally takes years (15 to 20, say) for a lieutenant to rise through the ranks to general. People get rusty, given that kind of time; I didn't notice a great deal of rust on the Shepherd.

Like I said, my money is on Book being ex-Gestapo-alike, or maybe ex-Green Beret-alike. But I'd be happy enough to be proven wrong, if it meant the series was going to continue.
