1. soldiers lived in trenches for years
a. muddy, wet, cold, lice, rats
b. Europeans had lived in trenches much longer than Americans
C. Chateau – Thierry
1. June 1918 – Americans helped French when Germans came within 50 miles of Paris
2. By July 18 – Allies began a successful offense
D. Meuse – Argonne Offensive
1. September 26 – Americans advance on Germany in the Argonne Forest
2. lasted 7 weeks
3. by end of October – Germans were pushed back toward their border
4. November 11, 1918 – Great War ended
