Subject: Ch. 25 Unemployment and Relief

Unemployment and Relief
*unemployment extended throughout U.S. from city to city within a matter of weeks
*the unemployed were taught to believe that every individual was responsible for what was happening to themselves
*many of the men in this time felt embarassed and quilty that they lost their jobs, had no where to go, and needed money to support their families
*many of the families would turn to state and federal relief systems just to be able eat
*since these relief programs were not able to serve all of the demands of the newly unemployed, private charities tried to step in
* these charities failed and state agencies stepped in and failed also
*Food became so scarce, people would line up around the block for bread lines and soup kitchens, or even searching through garbage dumpsters
*many young women and men took off and went city to city to try to find any source of food or work
*the conditions in the rural ares were much worse because one-third of american farmers lost their land
*inaddition to this the dust bowl tore through the midwest distroying a large portion of the land that was left
*the drought continued for a decade
*this cange in climate drove the farmers from their land and to move westward towards California
*these people earned a new nickname now: "okies"
*they moved town to town to find work picking fruit and doing a large portion of work for very little pay
