Organize Battles
-United Auto WOrkers(auto union)
-UAW gained recruits
-made little progress in winning recognition from corporation
*Sit-Down Strike
-Dec. 1936 did a controversial & effective way for challenging corporate opposition:sit-down strike
-employees in Detroit sat down inside the plant refusing to work or leave& it made it so the company couldnt use strikebreaker
-Febuary 1937 General Motors 1st to recognize the UAW & other motor companies did too
-sit down strike workered for rubber workers too
-but it only survived breifly as a labor technique
*Steel Workers Organizing Committee
-SWOC involved 1000 of workers into sometimes bitter strikes
-March 1937 United States Steel recoginzed the union rather then to risk a strike
-small companies were less accommodating
*Memorial Day 1937
-striking workers from Republic Steel gathered w/ thier families for a picnic & demostrating in South Chicago
-they marched peacefully toward the steel plant
-police opened fire
-10 died & 90 wounded
-public had an out cry
-but steel companies won b/c 1937 strike failed
*Organized Labor's Rapid Growth
-in 1937 alone 4,720 strikes
-over 80% settled in favor of the unions
-end of the year 8 million workers were part of uions
-1914 10 million were part of of the unions which included Little Steel
