I. Black Abolitionists
A. Abolitionism in the North
i. most black abolitionists were free northern blacks
a. on all accounts, blacks probably had it harder in the north as free men, then in the south as slaves
- free blacks could only find jobs as servants or sailors
- they lived in extreme poverty
- they were victims of mob violence
- they were sometimes kidnapped and forced back into slavery
B. Free Blacks’ Commitment to Abolition
i. even though the free blacks lives were worse, they still wanted to help their southern counterparts
a. in the 1830s, many supported Garrison and his newspaper, The Liberator
C. Important African American Leaders
i. David Walker
a. a free black, militant, published the harsh pamphlet “Walker’s Appeal…To The Colored Citizens”
ii. Sojourner Truth
a. after spending some time in a powerful religious cult, she emerged as an important black spokesperson for abolitionism
iii. Fredrick Douglass – most important
a. escaped from slavery in 1838
- became an outspoken abolitionist speaker in England
- came back and purchased his freedom in 1847
- founded and antislavery newspaper
- wrote his autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Fredrick Douglass in 1845
- demanded not only freedom, but also full social and economic equality
- became a leader of abolition and formed alliances w/ other leader such as Garrison
