I. Garrison and Abolitionism
A. The Liberator
i. William Lloyd Garrison worked under Benjamin Lundy, a mild mannered Quaker and owner of the leading antislavery newspaper
a. after a while, Garrison became impatient w/ Lundy’s mild ways and moved to Boston in 1831 and began publishing his own newspaper, The Liberator
B. Garrison’s Belief’s
i. opponents of slavery should view everything from the blacks point of view
-they should demand that slavery be abolished immediately, not gradually
ii. he believed that colonization was just a way to get all the free blacks out of the u.s.
- he believed also that African Americans should be extended every right of the white man
C. American Antislavery Society (AAS)
i. Garrison’s ideas gained great momentum in the 1830s and in 1832, the AAS was formed and by 1838, there were over 250,000 members
ii. it was mostly successful b/c of the other similar reform movements of the time like abolitionism
a. one prominent abolitionist, Theodore Dwight Weld, said “slavery is a sin”
