I. Competing Notions of Freedom
A. Freedom for the Ex-Slaves
i. blacks wanted:
- money form government
- land from government
- legal equality
- all wanted: independence from white control
B. White Southerners
i. many white planters wanted to keep their slaves so they kept them legally bound to the plantation
a. even though the planters had somewhat good intentions, they were really trying to white supremacy
C. The Freedman’s Bureau (Directed by Gen. Oliver O. Howard)
i. gave many things to millions of blacks and similarly destitute whites
a. gave food
b. established schools and teachers
c. even tried to get blacks started on their own lands
ii. downfalls
a. only could last a year
b. far too small to deal with huge problems of southerners
iii. by the end of that year, new ideas for southern reconstruction were emerging
