I. The Compromise of 1877
A. Hayes vs. Tilden
i. north - Rutherford B. Hayes
ii. south - Samuel J. Tilden
iii. bitter campaign
a. at first it seemed Tilden won, but w/ disputed votes from LA, SC, FL, and OR, it threw the election in doubt
b. a deadlock lasted until Jan. 1877
B. Special Electoral Commission
i. the commission was formed and Hayes won all disputed votes
ii. a meeting was held between republicans and democrats to ensure Hayes’ victory
a. the north promised to take all troops out of the south in exchange for the democratic vote
C. The REAL Compromise
i. since Hayes was already in favor of the troop removal, the south wanted more
a. the north agreed to put at least one southerner in Hayes’ cabinet
b. control of federal patronage in their area
c. generous internal improvements
d. federal aid for the Texas and Pacific Railroad
ii. as a result Hayes was known to his critics as “his fraudulency”
D. after the compromise
i. the north tried to build a republican organization in the south
ii. the idea and plan flopped and was never carried out
