Chinese Migration
-known as "coolies", indentured servants whose condition was close to slavery
-settled mostly in Cali. and made up a tenth of population
-white americans welcomed them
*RCAISM
-some americans saw them as threats
-some chinese did very well for themselves
*JOBS
-worked in gold mines
-a cali. legislature enacted a "foreign miners" tax
-most lost thier jobs
*BULIDING THE TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD
-formed 90% of the Central Pacific labor force
-worked hard,few demands, accepted low wages
-often dangerous work
-1866 5,000 went on strike for more money and shorter days
-they were starved into giving in
-1869 railroad was completed
-then all were oout of jobs
*ESTABLISHMENT OF CHINATOWN
-half of population lived in the urban part of cali now
-"chinatowns"= powerful orginizations and formed by poeple of same clan or community in china
-took care of eachother
--"TONGS"=violent criminal orginzation
-many worked as common laborers,servants,unskilled factory workers
-chinses were 2/3 of all laundry workers
-many chinese women were sold into prostitution
-when ratio of chinese men to women became unbalance then
men would get wives
