A. Construction of Railroads
1. would make several new areas of settlement accessible
2. Chinese & Irish immigrants worked on the railroad
3. 1869-finished at Promontory Point (Northern Utah)

B. Key Role of the Railroad
1. Railroad companies promoted settlement
2. low rates-almost anyone could afford to travel West
C. Problems for Farmers
1. Fencing
a. farmers needed to enclose their land
b. 1873-Joseph H. Glidden & I. L. Ellwood (Illinois farmers) developed and sold barbed wire
c. solved fencing problem
2. Drought
a. growth in the West depended on irrigation
b. farmers drilled wells or found other methods of channeling water to their land
c. 1870’s-1880’s rainfall was above average and farmers thought it would stay like that
d. 1887-dry seasons began
e. neither state nor federal governments could fund irrigation projects
D. Hard Times for Farmers
1. few farmers had successful growth after drought
2. they could not pay their debts
3. many settlers moved back east
