Subject: Hispanic California and Texas

The missionaries and soldiers that accompanied them to their settlements used indians in the area as slave laborers.

The Mexican government began to decline the power of the church, so the mission society collapsed.

In its place grew an aristocracywhich had power over many chains of estates.

The Anglo-american population grew from these estates.

In the north and central parts of the state where the Anglo population grew, many californios experienced a series of defeats.

Many of the Californios lost their land and money during the gold rushbecause of take-overs, which were sometimes violent.

The southerners of the state had a market with the cattle they were raising which the migrants in the north wre interested in.

Mexicans and Mexican Americans became a part of the lower working class after the arisocracy failed later on in the 1880's.

A similar pattern occured in Texas when many landowners lost their land after Texas joined the United States.

In 1859, Mexican resentments erupted in an armed challenge to American power: a raid on a jail in Brownsville.

The resistence that freed all the slaves in the jail had little long term effect.

In 1875 the Mexican government captured all the resistnce members and imprisoned them.
