The independent farmer of popular myth was being overthrown by the commercial farmer

Commercial Farmers were self sufficient, specialized in cash crops,and bought their food from local farms and villages instead of making their own crops

This kind of farming raised living standards which made them dependent on bankers and intrest rates, rail roads and freight rate, other markets, and world supply and demand.

they could not regulate their production or influence the prices pf what they sold.

Farm output increased not only in the United States, bu in many other countries as well.

Cotton farmers depended on 70% of their annual income and wheat farmers was 30-40% but the international market put them at risk
