-nations main way of transportation
-created new forms of corporate orginization were modles for other industires
-1860 30,000miles of railroad to 52,000 in 1870,1880 93,000, 1890 163,000, 1900 193,000
-railroads got thier money from federal,state&local government,and investments abroad
-left railroads in control of few men
-which brought about modern corporation
