I. Survival of the Fittest
A. Social Darwinism
i. natural selection, only those who were meant to be rich were rich
ii. intellectuals such as Herbert Spencer and William Graham Sumner adopted this theory and added their opinions to it
B. Justifying the Status Quo
i. appealed to big business owners because it legitimized their success and confirmed their virtues
ii. appeals:
- placed their actions in the context of traditional American ideas of freedom and individualism
- above all, it justified their practices
iii. as a result of the owners justified feeling of power, the law of supply and demand became a big factor in American society
a. despite big business feelin of satisfaction, they all attempted to prevent competition, and even though the right to be successful was open to everyone, the rich wanted to eliminate the opportunity to prevent that competition
