I. The Immigrant Work Force
A. New Sources of Immigration
i. 1870s and 1880s
a. usual eastern immigrants : English, Irish, northern Europe
b. new eastern immigrants : Italians, Poles, Russians, Greeks, Slavs, and others
c. new western immigrants : Mexicans, Asians (until Chinese Exclusion act of 1882)
B. Reasons for Immigration
i. to escape poverty and oppression
ii. new opportunities
C. Ethnic Tensions
i. as more new kinds of immigrants came in, the traditional immigrants felt threatened by their arrival
a. west: Chinese and Mexicans competed for what was usually white and afro-american jobs
b. east: new immigrant who were paid lower wages replaced British and Irish workers in New England
ii. in these industries, workers tended to cluster together by ethnic group, creating a gang-like atmosphere in the factories and city sections
