-the biggest technological development was steel and iron production
-Iron production soared because of the 40,000 new miles of railroad tracks
-New process to create steel was created by blowing air into the molten hot iron
-Pitsburg, Penn. became the steel capitol of the world becausenew kinds of steel created a need for new types of fuel, particularly for athracite coalwhich was plentiful in Penn.
-new ores were soon needed and the industry spread rapidly all over Michigan
-new freighters were needed to ship the large amounts of ore across the lakes
-railroad rails and cars were soon made out of steel
-because of this, steel and railroad companies then merged to form "corporations" which providied a sustantial amount of capital
-petroleum became a large industry because it helped lube many machine parts, used in lamps, and the demand for it increased oil to forth place for the nations exports
