*the major craft union changed its name to the American Federation of Labor
*their opinion was opposite of the Knight's in that they wanted to get rid of unskilled workers
*the male leaders did not want women to work because they were weak and they brought down wages
*however, they paid women equally and encouraged women
*the AFL wanted to create a better atmosphere for workers and managers
*first was a strike for an eight hour work day
*at Haymarket Square, someone threw a bomb that killed 7 people and injured 67, police had killed 4 strikers the day before, killed another 4 while shooting into the crowds
*eight men were brought to trial, 7 sentenced to death, one committed suicide , 4 executed, and 2 spent life in prison
