i. fires destroyed a lot of older buildings in big cities
a. Great Chicago Fire of 1871
b. San Francisco – 1906
ii. gave way for newer things
a. development of professional fire departments
b. let architects build new buildings where old ones had burnt down
B. Disease
i. spread by low sanitation
a. no where for sewage and human waste to go
b. disease spread easily through poor sections of cities, and gradually moved to middle classes
- typhoid fever
- cholera
