I. Environmental Degradation
A. Conditions
i. poor neighborhoods
a. causes of environmental degradation:
- the presence of domesticated animals (horses, pigs, cows)
- poor waste management (leaking outdoor plumbing, no indoor plumbing, poor indoor plumbing)
B. Air Pollution
i. was most apparent and severe in urban areas
a. factories, stoves, and furnaces were some causes
ii. by 1910, large city sewage systems were in place to reduce the risk of water-born diseases such as yellow fever that killed 5,000 people in Memphis
C. Public Health Service
i. Alice Hamilton influenced government to create Public Health Service
a. PHS prevented work related diseases like tuberculosis, anemia, and Carbon Monoxide poisoning
b. established the priority of health by federal government and helped bring environmental dangers to factories’ attention
