The Party System
*Electoral Stability
-electorate from end of reconstruction until late 1890's was divided between republicans and democrats
-most states were fixed in there loyalties(Rep. or Demo.)
-voters decided at national election by voter turn out
-Rep. captured 2 presidency's
-Rep. control in Senate
-Demo. controled in House
*High Turnout
-Americans back then took pride and passion in thier party
-1860 & 1900 averaged 78% of eligible voter turnout
-for local& congressional elections 60 to 80% turnout
-women in most states had the voting right taken away
-almost all blacks & poor whites in the south had voting rights taken away too
-party loyalities were reflected region
-southern whites loyalities were w/ Democrats
-many northeners,blacks,whites were with Republicans
-Religion also had influence
-Demos to Catholics & immigrants
-Reps to middle-class, northern Protestans
*Cultural Basis of Party Identification
-somebody might go with a party b/c thier parents were apart of it
-also b/c church,region,ethnic group
