A. The Grange
1. a social and self-help association made up of farmers
B. Origins
1. 1867 – Oliver Kelley founded the National Grange of the Patrons of Husbandry
a. they attempted to bring farmers together to learn new scientific agricultural techniques
b. members kept the organization secret
c. after depression of 1873 membership rapidly increased
C. Economic Grievances
1. members began to locus less on social benefits and more on economic possibilities
2. farmers set up corporations
3. most Grange enterprises failed
D. Political Program
1. Grangers worked to elect legislators who supported their program
2. at one point they managed to gain control of the legislators in most states
3. 1870’s – temporary return of agricultural prosperity caused decline in the organization’s power
4. by 1880 – membership greatly decreased
