Garfield, and a stalwart for VP: Chester A. Arthur
- Garfield wins
- 3 mos. Into his presidency, Garfield was assassinated by a stalwart
iv. Arthur as president
a. tried to take an independent stance like Garfield and Hayes before him, but it failed
b. Patronage Act of 1883
- required that some federal jobs be given through application and interview and not by appointment from the president
