3. As a effort to build a society in which economic completion might gave way to cooperation
B. Mary Lease
1. The women’s role in the Alliances
a. They could vote and hold offices
b. Became a Populist orators
i. Lease was famous for urging farmers to” raise less corn and more hell”
2. Issues were the impact of drifting on family life in urban and rural society
3. The were more wide spread, than Grangers, but suffered from the similar problems
C. Birth of the People’s Party
1. The farmers form their own party
a. Leaders were Tom Watson and Leanidas Polk
i. Had northwestern and southern alliances, also the knight of labor
2. The new organization’s official name was the people’s party, well known as the populist
3. They had James Weaver for populist president candidate
a. Weaver pulled more than 1 million votes
b. The populist support of many republicans and democrats in Congress
