The Populist Constituency
A. They dreamed of creating a broad political coalition which included many groups
1. Populism always appealed principally to farmers with little long-range economic security
a. In the Midwest the populist were family farmers trying to hold on to their land
b. The south were many modest landowners, some sharecropper and tenant farmers
2. One thing in common was they were engaged in a type of farming that was becoming less viable in the face of new, mechanics diversified and consolidated conomercial agriculture
a. Populist never got significant success
B. “Free Silver”
1. They endorsed a demand that the national partly only later accepted: Free silver
a. Allowing silver to be part of the currency to expand money supply
b. The populist enjoyed their success because of the mining of silver in the far west
C. “Colored Alliances”
1. In the southern the populist made black farmers part of the allies.
a. How had quarter million members
b. White were still in control
2. When southern cons natives started attacking populist the movement quickly faded
3. The populist leaders were rural middle class
a. All protests
b. Produced the first generation of what to become distinctive and enduring political breed
i. Donnelly was a leader
