A. The Philippines Question
1. The annexation of the Philippines was very different then the annexation of Puerto Rico
a. McKinley claimed to be reluctant to support annexation
2. He made poor excuse to his decision
a. They couldn’t give up to other counties who were imperialist power
b. They couldn’t let the Philippines be self govern
3. The solution was to educate them and uplift and Christianize them
4. The Treaty of Paris brought a formal end to the war
a. The American still tried to get the island by a bribe
B. Anti- Imperialist League
1. Movement arose around the country to oppose acquisition of the Philippines
a. The league included Andrew Carnegie, Mark Twain, Samuel Gompers, Senator John Sherman, and others
b. Some believe that imperialism was immoral
c. Most people feared it.
2. Fight against annexation, attracted a widespread of followers
a. Led to vigorous campaign against ratification of the Paris treaty
C. Favoring to imperialist
1. Theodore Roosevelt saw it as reinvigorate the nation
a. Others support it for different reason, however most were making money
D. Election of 1900
1. William Jennings Bryan, a fervent anti-imperialist, tried to get the democrat to support the treaty
2. McKinley ran as republican against Bryan who ran a Democrat
a. McKinley won again
